Kemper Sports Management Data Breach

On September 9, 2024, Kemper Sports Management, LLC (“Kemper”) reported a cybersecurity incident (“Data Breach”) to the Attorney General of Maine. Kemper reported that on April 1, 2024, it discovered suspicious activity in its computer network. A subsequent investigation found that on April 1, 2024, an unauthorized user had accessed and exfiltrated sensitive and confidential information from Kemper’s personnel files.

On or about September 9, 2024, Kemper began sending out data breach notification letters to those affected by the Data Breach. Each notification letter includes one year of complimentary access to credit monitoring and identity restoration services through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company.

According to Kemper’s report, approximately 62,815 individuals were impacted by the Data Breach. As the Data Breach was only recently announced, Kemper has not yet disclosed additional details. If you received a data breach notification letter from Kemper, it indicates that you were affected by the Data Breach.

Founded in 1979 and headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois, Kemper is a golf and hospitality company that manages more than 140 golf courses, private clubs, sports venues, and resorts nationwide. Kemper has offices throughout the country and employs more than 7,000 individuals and generates approximately $750 million in annual revenue.

WHAT INFORMATION IS INVOLVED?

According to Kemper’s report to the Maine Attorney General, the type of compromised information varied among individuals and potentially included:

  • Full names
  • Social Security numbers

This information is referred to as your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”). It provides critical details about you and is an integral part of your identity. Businesses are legally required to protect this information, or they risk incurring statutory penalties and other legal repercussions. When PII is stolen, it can be used by identity thieves to commit fraudulent activities using your identity.

The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for credit and identity protection services as soon as possible. California offers extra protections and legal rights to its residents through the California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”).
