On June 12, 2024, Landmark Admin, LLC (“Landmark”) made its first report of a cybersecurity incident (“Data Breach”) to the Maine Attorney General’s Office. According to Landmark, the Data Breach was first detected on May 13, 2024, when suspicious activity was noticed within its system. By the following day, May 14, 2024, Landmark confirmed that an unauthorized third party had attempted to access its network. A subsequent investigation revealed that the Data Breach had compromised certain confidential and sensitive files due to unauthorized access.

On October 23, 2024, Landmark confirmed that approximately 806,519 individuals were affected by the Data Breach. Landmark further disclosed to the Maine Attorney General’s Office that, during its ongoing investigation, the unauthorized third party regained access to its IT network on June 17, 2024. This subsequent incident also included unauthorized access to files containing confidential information.

Additionally, Landmark reported that the Data Breach affected information provided by Liberty Bankers Insurance Group. This included data from several of its subsidiaries, specifically:

  • American Monumental Life Insurance Company
  • Pellerin Life Insurance Company
  • American Benefit Life Insurance Company
  • Liberty Bankers Life Insurance Company
  • Continental Mutual Insurance Company
  • Capitol Life Insurance Company

These entities were impacted as part of the broader breach involving confidential consumer information.

Landmark has begun sending out data breach notification letters to those affected by the Data Breach. If you received a data breach notification letter from Landmark, it indicates that you were affected by the Data Breach.

Based in Brownwood, Texas, Landmark Admin, LLC is a company that provides personalized third-party administrative (TPA) solutions for life insurance and annuity companies. The company offers a range of services, including policy tax reporting, policy accounting, regulatory reporting assistance, reinsurance support, and web access for agents. Landmark employs more than 32 people and generates approximately $7 million in annual revenue.

  WHAT INFORMATION IS INVOLVED?

According to its report to the Attorney General’s Office in Maine, the type of compromised information potentially included the following:

  • Names,
  • Addresses,
  • Social Security numbers,
  • Drivers’ license numbers,
  • State identification card numbers,
  • Passport numbers,
  • Bank account and routing numbers,
  • Medical information,
  • Health insurance policy numbers,
  • Dates of birth,
  • Life and annuity policy information.

This information is called your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”). It tells others about you and is considered part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal penalties. Stolen PII can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity.

Personal medical information (a specific type of PII) is referred to as Protected Health Information (“PHI”). It is protected under both state and federal law. Healthcare providers and other businesses that handle PHI are required to protect that information. Like stolen PII, stolen PHI can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity. Quite often, PII and PHI are used in conjunction by hackers.

The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for credit and identity protection services as soon as possible.

California offers extra protections and legal rights to its residents through the California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”).
