Sarku Japan Data Breach

Sarku Japan data breach Between January 13 or 14, 2022 and February 6, 2022, the Sarku Japan (“Sarku”) restaurant chain was hacked by a group of cybercriminals. Sarku discovered the data breach on February 6, 2022, and completed its initial investigation on February 10, 2022.  Sarku began notifying impacted people on March 16, 2022, confirming that unauthorized third parties obtained access to Sarku’s computer network and may have stolen names, addresses, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers. Your information was most likely taken by the cybercriminals by accessing Sarku’s computer networks. On June 1, 2022, Sarku finalized its internal review, yet it has made no final determination as to the full nature and scope of this data breach. Sarku mailed additional notices of the data breach to impacted people beginning on or about August 8, 2022.

Sarku is a quick-serve restaurant focusing on Japanese cuisine headquartered in Markam, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1987 in Boston, Massachusetts, Sarku is located at 30 Broad Street, 14th Floor, New York, New York, 10004. It has 250 restaurants with locations in the United States, Puerto Rico, and South America. Sarku does $121 million a year in sales and currently employs 1,800 plus people.

In total, Sarku claims the data of over 28,298 individuals was compromised in this breach. If you received a data breach incident letter from Sarku you were impacted by the breach.

WHAT INFORMATION IS INVOLVED?

According to Sarku the following information was exposed:

  • Names
  • Addresses
  • Dates of Birth
  • Social Security numbers

This information is called your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”). It tells others about you and is considered part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal penalties. Stolen PII can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity.

Sarku is offering 12 months of free Identity Monitoring. The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for credit and identity protection services as soon as possible. California offers extra protections and legal rights to its residents through the California Consumer Privacy Act.
