Transvaginal Mesh Implant Complications

Transvaginal mesh implants are synthetic slings intended to treat Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) and Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) by supporting the urethra and/or pelvic floor muscles. Although this surgical treatment gained significant popularity over the past decade, there is insufficient evidence that the mesh improves these conditions.

In July 2011, the FDA issued a public health notification warning of serious complications associated with the placement of surgical mesh. The fibrous material can act like a grater, shredding tissue in the surrounding area and result in erosion also described as mesh exposure, extrusion or protrusion. Additional complications include:

• infection
• pain
• urinary problems
• mesh disintegration
• recurrence of prolapsed and/or incontinence
• bowel, bladder and blood vessel perforation
• displacement of the rectum, bladder and/or uterus

These complications have a negative effect on quality of life, interfering with functions such as walking, sitting and sexual intercourse. Additional surgery may be required, but, unfortunately, does not necessarily improve the condition largely due to the permanence of the surgical transvaginal mesh placement.
