Northwest Radiologists and Mount Baker Imaging Data Breach

​​​​​​​​​On March 26, 2025, Northwest Radiologists and Mount Baker Imaging (“Northwest/MBI”) announced that it had experienced a significant network disruption on or around January 25, 2025, and opened an investigation that same day. Their investigation revealed that patient’s data had been accessed by an unauthorized third party (the “Data Breach”). Northwest/MBI have yet to determine the total number of individuals affected by the Data Breach.  

As Northwest/MBI’s investigation is still ongoing and they have not yet sent out notices to individuals who might have had their data impacted. However, Northwest/MBI have set up a dedicated call center to answer questions and address related concerns regarding the Data Breach, at 1-877-593-0354. If you are a current or former patient of Northwest/MBI, your information may have been affected by this Data Breach. 

Northwest/MBI provides a variety of services, including ultrasounds, MRIs, CT scans, X-rays, and 3-D mammograms, at six locations across Whatcom County, Washington. With locations in Lynden and Bellingham, Washington, Northwest/MBI employs approximately 100 individuals and generates an estimated $25 million in annual revenue. 

WHAT INFORMATION IS INVOLVED IN THE NORTHWEST RADIOLOGISTS AND MOUNT BAKER IMAGING DATA BREACH?

According to Northwest/MBI, the types of information compromised vary by individual but may include the following:​

  • Full names 
  • Addresses
  • Telephone numbers
  • Email addresses
  • Social Security numbers 
  • Driver’s license numbers
  • Dates of birth
  • Medical information, including: 
    • Treatment or diagnosis information
    • Provider names
    • Medical record numbers or patient identification numbers
    • Health insurance information
    • Treatment cost information

This information is called your Personally Identifiable Information (“PII”). It tells others about you and is considered part of your identity. Businesses are required to secure this information or risk facing statutory penalties, among other legal penalties. Stolen PII can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity. 

Personal medical information (a specific type of PII) is referred to as Protected Health Information (“PHI”). It is protected under both state and federal law. Healthcare providers and other businesses who handle PHI are required to protect that information. Like stolen PII, stolen PHI can be used by identity thieves to engage in fraudulent activity using your identity. Quite often, PII and PHI are used in conjunction by hackers.

The best way to protect yourself after a data breach is to sign up for credit and identity protection services as soon as possible. 

California offers extra protections and legal rights to its residents through the California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”).
